What after 12th?
In India, 12th standard/grade/class is an important point in a student’s life. Under the 10+2 education system in India, candidates have to undergo two years of schooling (11th and 12th class). The interesting part is that a student has three main streams to choose from (for 11th and 12th classes). These three streams are –
Each stream revolves around few core stream-specific subjects. For example, Science stream consists of core subjects like – Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics or Biology. Arts stream consists of core subjects like – Social Science, History, Literature etc. And commerce stream consists of core subjects like – Accounting, Economics, Statistics, Mathematics etc.
Based on his/her academic interest, strength and passion, a student may choose any one of these streams after 10th. For example, if you want to become a Doctor, you may choose Science stream. If you want to become an Economist, commerce stream will be the best option. If you want to become a Historian, arts stream is ideal for you.
What after completing 12th standard, some of you may ask. After passing 12th standard, students in India may apply the following courses –
- Vocational courses
- Certification programs
- Diploma courses
- Bachelor’s Degree programs
- Integrated programs (Bachelor’s + Master’s)
Majority of the 12th passed candidates apply for Bachelor’s Degree programs. Many of these professional courses after 12th are tied to specific streams. For example -engineering, medicine, nursing, architecture – these professional courses belong to the science stream. In other words, arts and commerce stream students are simply not eligible to pursue B.Tech., MBBS, B.Arch. etc.
Some of these Degree courses are not tied to a specific stream. For example – BA. Now BA (Bachelor of Arts) program is traditionally associated with arts stream. But even science and commerce stream students are eligible to pursue BA program.
To make things easy for my readers, I’ve compiled a list of the three main streams (Arts, Commerce & Science) and traditional courses associated with these streams. Here it is –
