B.Voc.: Duration, eligibility and other details
B.Voc. stands for Bachelor of Vocation. It is a vocational training course. Here is a quick overview of the academic program –
|Name of the course||B.Voc. (Bachelor of Vocation)|
|Type of course||Vocational training course|
|Eligibility||12th pass or equivalent qualification|
It is an undergraduate level Bachelor’s Degree course. The academic program is three years long. Each academic year is divided into two semesters. Each semester is six months long.
Students who have passed 12th class are eligible to pursue this course. Subject/stream requirement (in 12th class) may vary from one B.Voc. course to another.
B.Voc. is a relatively new vocational training program. Traditional vocational training courses have been offered in formats such as – Diploma, skill diploma, certification etc. But these programs lacked ‘Bachelor’s Degree’ tag. What these traditional courses could offer at best was – Diploma certificate.
UGC decided to step in and change this situation. As a result, they introduced B.Voc. course. This new course format brought with it many unique features. The main attraction of course was the availability of Bachelor’s Degree. Yes, on completing this course, a graduate will earn Bachelor’s Degree certificate from the Governing body.
Besides that, the program also offers flexible entry and exit options for its candidates. Applicants who have completed relevant ITI course, technicians or working professionals who have adequate work experience may use relaxed entry norms and gain admission through lateral entry.
Students pursuing this course may choose to quit the program in between and still walk away with a certificate. For example – on quitting after completing one year, a student will obtain Diploma certificate. On quitting after completing two years, a student will obtain Advanced Diploma certificate.
Availability of entry and exit options have made this course quite useful to various categories of students. Let us talk about B.Voc. curriculum now. Here we go –

As I mentioned before, B.Voc. is a vocational training program. Students who have passed 12th class are eligible to pursue this course.
The main aim of a vocational training course is to build relevant skills in students. These skills are normally related to a particular industry/domain/sector. These skills will help one obtain a decent job.
Lack of skills among the youth is a major factor responsible for the increasing rate of unemployment. Employers today are keen on recruiting candidates who are skillful. Employers are not interested in providing training after recruitment.
