The Sorry State of Italian Giant AC Milan

AC Milan’s transfer window activities was not promising at all

AC Milan is one of the most successful European football clubs. They used to rule Serie A. AC Milan has produced and developed notable players like Franco Baresi, Alessandro Nesta, Paolo Maldini, Cafu, Clarence Seedorf etc. But things have changed now. They are now being overshadowed by rivals Juventus and Napoli. They barely managed to qualify for Champions League. They managed to finish third in Serie A last season due to sheer luck. Despite this, their activities in transfer window this time has been questionable.

Inter Milan used to rule Serie A with Ibrahimovic firing plenty of goals for them. After Ibrahimovic’s transfer to AC Milan from FC Barcelona, it was AC Milan’s chance to bully Inter Milan. They dominated Serie A. This successful period was largely due to the presence of two stars- Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva.

Ibrahimovic, the big Swedish striker scored crucial goals for the team and Brazilian Thiago Silva commanded the Milan defence. This pair ensured that Milan scored goals and kept clean sheets at the same time. Thiago Silva was a natural leader at AC Milan.

Due to financial problems, AC Milan decided to sell their star players to PSG. This proved costly for Milan. The duo recently won the French League with PSG and had an impressive show at the Champions League too. Further, Milan made some foolish decisions like selling Andrea Pirlo. The midfield maestro joined Juventus and played an integral role in Juventus’ back to back Scudetto winning seasons.

AC Milan’s current squad has good players. Their forwards are talented and young. The purchase of Mario Balotelli from Manchester City was a good one. Balotelli has scored some very important goals for Milan so far. Further, they have the young, talented and loyal Stephan El Shaarawy. He is an exciting talent who can transform Milan’s fortunes.

Milan’s forwards guarantee goals. But what they really need is a good midfield and defence. Their midfield and defence needs much improvement. Their weak points were well exposed by Verona.

The most recent transfer blunder made my Milan is the transfer of Kevin Prince Boateng. Boateng was a key player for AC Milan. He was the dynamo and engine of the team. The club’s decision to sell Boateng and bring in an aged Kaka is questionable. Few seasons ago, Milan set out to build a young and talented team. They targeted young players in the transfer window.

Now with the purchase of aged players like Ricardo Kaka and Matri, it seems that Milan have changed their transfer policy again. Kaka was a phenomenon during his time at Milan. He was and is still loved by Milan fans. But his footballing prowess has changed a lot. He is no longer the old Kaka who almost single handedly guided Milan to Champions League glory in 2007. He failed to live up to his name at Real Madrid. He is prone to injuries and has lost his old pace.

AC Milan fans around the globe are excited about their hero- Ricardo Kaka’s return to San Siro. Let us wait and watch whether Kaka will prove his critics wrong with scintillating performances. But, if Milan are serious about reclaiming their old glory and dethrone rivals Juventus, then they should start investing in young players and some proven players.
