Rehtaeh Parsons- victim of cyberbullying
After the death of Canadian teen Rehtaeh Parsons, her mother decided to create a facebook page in memory of her daughter. Within just a few days, the page has attracted loads of people and got more than 30,000 likes. Besides Facebook, popular social networking site Twitter also reported trending of ‘Nova Scotia’ around the world.
In 2011, Rehtaeh Parsons attended a party, where she was raped by four boys. One of them clicked some pictures of the act. Soon, the photos found their way to the internet and due to humiliation, the Parsons had to shift to Halifax.
The police also couldn’t come up with any satisfactory results. They blamed it on the lack of evidence. In April 2013, she attempted to take her own life by hanging. She was taken to the hospital, where she remained on life support before finally she died on 7th April.
Online communities have started demanding justice for the teen. People are demanding a police inquiry. An online petition has garnered many signatures.
Today, an unknown figure named ‘anonymous’ published a video stating that he’ll reveal the names of the boys involved to the public. He has urged the authorities to start an official inquiry ro he would make the identities of the culprits public.
Rehtaeh’s mother, Leah Parsons has urged that the boys’ identity shouldn’t be made public. She asked the infuriated people to leave the boys alone. She said that the police and authorities should go after the boy and not the people. She said that if the people went after the culprits, then that would be bullying. Since her daughter also died because of cyber-bullying, she is against it. She wants the police to initiate an inquiry and go after the boys.
