A Google friendly blog means good SEO, more organic traffic, better rankings, better page rank etc. So, there are enough reasons for a blogger to start using Webmaster tools regularly. Here, I will describe to you some very important features of Webmaster tools and how you must use it to optimize your blog.

#1 Important Site Messages

I recommend bloggers to log in to their Webmaster tools account each day and check for ‘new site messages’. Site messages notifies the webmaster about important issues related to their blog.

It notifies issues like increase in 404 broken links, presence of malware on blog/site, increase in duplicate tag etc. This is Google’s way of telling that a serious problem has popped up on your blog and you must solve it immediately. If you fail to do so, your search rankings will suffer.

#2 HTML improvements

This option brings to your notice issues like duplicate title tags, duplicate meta tags, short meta description etc. Solving these issues will further increase blog’s efficiency and user experience.

I recommend bloggers to check this section on Webmaster tools regularly and keep a check on duplicate title tags, meta tags etc.

#3 Search Traffic

This section has various options. It helps a blogger understand where his organic traffic is exactly coming from, search queries, impressions, clicks etc.

It also shows other important analytical data like the number of external sites linking to your blog, internal links on your blog etc. So, if you want to get an idea of your blog’s stats and traffic figures, use this section.

#4 Google Index

This section has options like checking the index status, content key words etc.

The option of content keywords is particularly useful because it helps understand the various keywords related to a blog and their significance.

#5 Crawl

A very important section of Webmaster tools. It shows important data like Crawl Errors (site error and URL errors -404 error) on your blog, Crawl stats etc.

Another important option on this section is- Sitemaps. This option enables a blogger to test and submit sitemaps of their blog. Submitting a sitemap helps Google’s robots know your blog’s structure well and enables them to crawl your blog better.

#6 Malware

Notifies your blog’s health. This option lets you know if your blog is free from malwares or not. If your site is affected by malware, it will show you a notification and describe details like- the infected pages on your blog, likely malware type, remedies etc.

I recommend bloggers to regularly check their blog’s health using this option. If your site is affected by malware and you don’t remove it, then Google will warn your blog’s visitors about the malware threat. This is bad for your blog’s traffic.

#7 Additional Tools

If you want to verify your blog’s Google authorship, then this section will be of much use. In additional tools section, you will find ‘Structured data testing tool (rich snippets tool)’. This tool will help you verify Google authorship for your blog.

#8 Labs

This section has options like- Author stats, instant preview, site performance etc. Author stats will be shown only if your authorship has been verified. Instant preview option can be used to check Google’s preview of your blog.

Site performance option can be used to check stats like page load time, loading speed etc. The page speed insight is a very useful feature. You just need to enter your blog’s url. Google will analyze your blog’s loading speed. Then, it will rate your blog’s performance (on a mobile device and desktop) out of 100. It also shows suggestions to improve your blog’s page speed.
